Types of Water Damage
Water damage is when water intrudes and attacks a structure, such as causing molds, rotting wood, rusting metal, and delaminating surfaces. The greatest damage comes from flooding, but it can also be caused by interior faults, such as broken pipes, clogged toilets, and overflowed washing machines.
There are three basic types of water damage. Clean water damage, grey water damage, and black water damage. Clean water damage is when the water is relatively clean and it won’t harm people by itself. It generally comes from a clean source, such as when a water supply line is broken. Grey water damage is when the water has a significant amount of harmful chemical or physical agents. It can cause illness to people who come in contact with it. Grey water damage can come from broken dishwasher discharge, washing machine leakage, and sump pump failures. Black water damage is the worst of the three. It is quite disgusting and contains harmful bacteria and fungi. Anyone who is exposed to black water is at risk of severe illness or even death. It can come from clogged toilets and sewage systems which discharge feces-infested water. Water damage restoration is the process of restoring a building back to its original condition after it suffered water damage. The first step of restoration is to survey the home, and probe the areas that were damaged. Then the repairmen will find the source of water damage and prevent it from happening again. The next step of water damage repair is to dry out the damaged areas. This can be done by using dehumidifiers, wood dryers, air movers, and air scrubbers. The repair personnel will then disinfect the affected area and treat any offending odors. The repairmen will need to monitor the water damage cleaning process and make sure the water and moisture is dried out thoroughly. This is necessary to prevent molds, decay, termites, and other problems. Water damage clean up usually takes two or three days. The heavy duty drying machines need to be left in the residence to make sure all the contents are dry. This may inconvenience the residents, but it is necessary to completely dry out the home to prevent further problems. When the process is complete, the restoration manager will do a final inspection, and when he is satisfied, the repair team will remove the machines. The residents can then return and enjoy their home.
